Snagging Run-Ons

The three main types of sentence errors are fragments, run-ons, and dangling modifiers. Fragments are incomplete sentences that are presented as complete sentences. Run-ons are two or more sentences that have been incorrectly joined. Dangling modifiers are misplaced parts of a sentence that usually end up causing confusion in readers. This article takes a closer look at run-ons.

Run-ons occur when two or more complete ideas are incorrectly joined. Run-ons are also classified as either comma splices or fused sentences. A comma splice incorrectly joins two independent clauses with a comma. A fused sentence runs two independent clauses together without an appropriate conjunction or punctuation mark.

Here are examples of a comma splice and a fused sentence:

My neighbor enjoys gardening, she grows roses more than any other flower.

An on-line search engine is a great tool, it can be handy when conducting research.

Correcting Run-ons

There are usually four ways to correct comma splices and fused sentences:

1. The clauses can be separated into two sentences

2. A comma and coordinating conjunction can be inserted between the clauses to create a compound sentence.

3. A semicolon can be inserted between the clauses.

4. Subordinating one clause to the other to create a complex sentence.

Using the four ways listed above to correct the run-ons, the previous sentences would read like the following:

1. My neighbor enjoys gardening. She grows roses more than any other flower.

An on-line search engine is a great tool. It can be handy when conducting research.

2. My neighbor enjoys gardening, and she grows roses more than any other flower.

An on-line search engine is a great tool, and it can be handy when conducting research.

3. My neighbor enjoys gardening; she grows roses more than any other flower.

An on-line search engine is a great tool; it can be handy when conducting research.

4. My neighbor enjoys gardening because she grows roses more than any other flower.

An on-line search engine is a great tool because it can be handy when conducting research.

Always be sure to edit your short story, essay, novel, or whatever piece of writing you are preparing to present in its best light because editing allows you to find run-ons and other errors that might occur in your writing.
